This panel discussion features local volunteers Rock West and Matt Lenfesty, who have worked in Haiti.

Film Presentation: The Agronomist, @ Jewett Hall, UMA
This documentary explores the life of Jean Dominique, a Haitian radio journalist and human rights activist who was gunned down in the spring of 2000. Inspiring and enlightening, learn about the Haitian struggle for freedom of speech and freedom of the press during political unrest. This film is rated PG-13 and lasts approximately 90 minutes.

Come and create a colorful mask in this 2 part program ages 5 through adult. Children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. We will be painting our creation during part 2. Please sign-up at Lithgow Library. Space is limited.

Maine Medical Volunteers in Haiti, @ Lithgow Library Reading Room
This panel, moderated by Dr. Laurel Coleman, features Elizabeth Foley, Dr. Cynthia DeSoi, Dr. Larry Mutty. Their discussion will explore the realities of medical issues and health care in Haiti. While poverty and AIDS are overwhelming problems in Haiti, these medical professionals are using their skills to make a difference. Find out how they got involved, what skills and preparations they needed, and how you might help in Haiti or other places that need medical volunteers.

This film is based on John le Carré's novel by the same name. This film is rated R and lasts approximately 129 minutes.

An Introduction to Haiti: Beyond Stereotypes, Into Engagement, @ The Maine State Library
Jennifer J. Thorn, assistant professor of English at Colby College, will include in her talk the legacy of colonialism on Haiti's society and politics, negative stereotypes that the West has about Haitians, and Haitian history (slavery, Haitian Revolution, Duvalier dictatorship). She will also speak of her first-hand involvement in health and nutrition programs in Haiti.

An Afternoon with Tracy Kidder, @ North Wing, Augusta Civic Center
Spend an afternoon with the author of Mountains Beyond Mountains. Pulitzer prize winning author Tracy Kidder will speak about his writing, and will answer questions from the audience. His books will be available for sale at the event, and the author will sign copies for readers.

We are excited to have Zili Misik join us this year. The group is an 8-piece all female band that performs dance and roots music of the African Diaspora. Their music connects Haitian roots, jazz, high life, reggae, samba, Cuban son, gospel and neo-soul.Zili Misik is an aural, visual, and kinetic experience!
