In 1998 the Washington Center for the Book, along with the Seattle Public Library, decided to try to answer the question, What if we all read the same book? In a city-wide project to promote literature, reading, and community involvement they chose The Sweet Hereafter, by Russell Banks, and scheduled a month's worth of reading and discussion programs all over Seattle. The response was overwhelming, as citizens, businesses and organizations came together around the event. Following the project's stunning success, the idea swept the nation. Libraries in communities large and small soon developed their own One Book programs and discovered the benefits of a large-scale reading experience.
